Successor to the S730, S740 adopted the same "double" unusual format, but is in fact rather practice: not touch screen over a numeric keypad and sliding QWERTY keyboard behind. However, the design of the S740 is at odds with that of his predecessor, too bulky and not aesthetics.
Closed, the S740 has an air phone piece, albeit a little thick and heavy (140 g), but its elongated silhouette and its angular design similar to that of Diamond Touch and Touch Pro are forgetting that it has a full QWERTY keyboard sliding. Once accessible, QWERTY keyboard, with keys very pleasant to pressure, and distributed on 4 ranks, can enter messages quickly under all circumstances. Only downside: as with the Touch Pro, the back of the mobile is not flat, it can not rest with stability on a flat surface so that the texts on tape with both hands. Enter with two inches is the only way, sometimes a little uncomfortable (because the keyboard is quite large, requiring some acrobatics with inches). For the rest, ergonomics S740 is very correct, with two buttons above the keyboard to access menus when the display is in landscape mode.
Display small but good quality
When deploying the keyboard, the display automatically switches to landscape mode, while a menu dedicated to the message appears, giving access to SMS / MMS, e-mail and instant messaging. Some may find the screen a bit small, with 2.4 inches diagonally and a QVGA resolution, it offers the minimum to display photos, a map from Google Maps or to surf the web (Mobile, preferably ). However, for a smartphone dedicated to voice calls and messaging, the choice of HTC seems logical.
Full, the S740 has nothing to envy Touch Pro in terms of specifications: compatible 3G + (up to 7.2 Mbps), the S740 board also WiFi connectivity 802.11b / g, a GPS (A-GPS compatible ) And a photo sensor of 3.2 million pixels. Powerful enough, it was equipped with a Qualcomm processor of 528 MHz and 256 MB of RAM. Running Windows Mobile 6.1 (non-touch edition), this terminal has been responsive in all circumstances. And with energy savings by the small screen, the autonomy of the S740 has proved correct: at least 2 days in intensive use, with a battery of 1000 mAh.
Side storage, 256 MB of ROM are available, and expandable with a microSD memory card (compatible microSD HC), which is oddly housed in a door behind the screen (when the keyboard is deployed), in the same place as the SIM card. To change the memory card, it should also remove the SIM card, to extinguish the smartphone to perform this operation. A defect minor, but somewhat incomprehensible.
In addition to the classic features of Windows Mobile 6.1 (and the presence of Office Mobile), HTC offers an additional RSS reader and Google Maps. Unfortunately (as with all smartphones currently marketed by HTC) lack of true GPS navigation solution integrated-whether it will necessarily acquire more.
